winauth VS SteamDesktopAuthenticator

You will probably get tradelocked early on if you don't set up your account's security measures. When setting up the authenticator, you can use authy instead of google's app or winauth if you don't have a phone.

Winauth is a thing that exists as well, but it's not actively maintained anymore. I don't recommend anyone use it unless using a phone is not an option. DO YOU GUYS NOT HAVE PHONES!?

Honestly, this causes me much uncertainty in regards to something like Google Authenticator or other TOTP solutions.

I mean, Google's solution in particular has a "Transfer accounts" option that lets you use QR codes for a backup, but that still feels somewhat worse than having desktop software as well like KeePass and some password/biometrics protected database file like .kdbx that I could open on my phones, tablets, computers etc.

Apparently the closest you can get on the desktop is Authy, which is a TOTP client that runs on multiple platforms: https://authy.com/download/

There was also WinAuth, but it seemingly isn't updated anymore, at least since 2018: https://github.com/winauth/winauth

For a temporary period either use https://github.com/Jessecar96/SteamDesktopAuthenticator or https://github.com/winauth/winauth to transfer your 2FA to 1 one of those as otherwise Steam Mobile App will drive you nuts making you confirm 2600 items 1 by 1. There are many YouTube videos and Steam Guides how to do this properly and those apps have Auto-Market confirm functionality.

If all else fails, you can try using winauth 3.6.2 for this. It's an old program, but afaik it gets the job done.

You don't have to use google's authenticator program for the purposes of your account's security. You can use winauth or authy instead.

WinAuth

You need to switch to https://github.com/Jessecar96/SteamDesktopAuthenticator because if you check the WinAuth last update, it's from 2017 so it was bound to break eventually like it did on you but this project got updated last week to catch up with latest Steam update.

You can export your code from Steam Guard using the github project Steam Desktop Authenticator and exporting the code to your software 2FA of choice.

If you're fine with not using the Steam app, you can use Steam Desktop Authenticator to acquire the TOTP secret, then transfer the mobile authentication file to your device.
