I had this error so I thought I'd share the fix here to help others. If you get this error make sure you formatted your HDD with wLaunchELF. If you have the error even though you formatted with wLaunchELF. It’s fixable without having to reformat your HDD. Here are the steps

Just added a 300GB HDD. Getting a ‘Bad APA partition table’ when trying to connect with HDL. How can I fix this?
How did you format your HDD? If you haven't added any games yet, try to reformat it with the console itself by using wLaunchELF.

Q: use an audio medium to transfer code
Yeah, it's all fairly simple, and if you want to test it you can run it all with disc images mounted in PCSX2, a Playstation 2 emulator. SMS can apparently be compiled for Windows, but I'd be shocked if that included all of the modules. Easiest testing setup would probably be with wLaunchELF and disc images. Looks like this is just a fork of the one I mentioned earlier. If you still have a PS2, even better.
