I've been using VSTools: https://github.com/morris/vstools a really nice tool I found while looking for people who have deconstructed the game. In the browser version: https://morris.github.io/vstools/ if you have a copy of the game you can browse the files with it and with some homework on http://datacrystal.romhacking.net/wiki/Vagrant_Story you can load levels and models. you can turn on/off textures, vertex shading, wireframes, other cool stuff too. it's what im using to capture images of the maps as well.

Vagrant Story is widely recognized for its beautiful art direction. This shows the attention taken for even a single room - it isn't just nice textures, but careful layout of light/dark (which was all pre-baked in those days) in combination to make several flat plates come alive together. As a matter of fact a story was created today and nbarkhina offered to implement save states. MemCards is on my list but first I want to improve the recompiler to produce more accurate results and timing characteristics and runs even faster.
