virt-column.nvim: displays a character as the colorcolumn, neovim colorcolumn is too thick because it just colors the column bg and it's very distracting, this is more minimal and doesn't get in the way

Highlights named markdownH* work only when treesitter is disabled, so you should disable treesitter for markdown. Otherwise use https://github.com/lukas-reineke/headlines.nvim/

Markdown in neovim
https://github.com/lukas-reineke/headlines.nvim this also improves the look of markdown headers, making it a little more similar to how they are rendered in emacs. Without different font sizes / styles in terminal windows, I think this is the best you can get.
