https://github.com/chrisbra/Recover.vim - oh wow, that provides diff functionality with a [C]ompare option to choose. That helps prevent the "whoops I chose the wrong option" scenario which I hadn't considered when making this post. It's possible that compare screen might make it visually obvious which is which, but the README doesn't have a screenshot of that screen.

Is it possible to get MacVim to remember what it had open and auto-recover on a machine crash?
OK Christian Brabandt's Recover.vim seems to do the fallback option pretty well.
