You may be able to emulate it with cnoremap. See vim-rsi which is the set -o emacs version of what you want (but it also applies in insert mode).

Toggle off Vim keymappings
I would just define whatever "standard text-editing keyboard shortcuts" you want in insert mode, and then just use insert mode as your "vim for note-taking". Kind of like Tim Pope's RSI but with the "standard" key bindings you want instead of bindings based on Emacs/readline.

What is the coolest, unknown(-ish) plugin that you're using that other people could benefit from?
vim-cool Not sure if there's an easier way to do it than having this plugin, but it disables search highlighting when you're done, and enables again when you search again. Makes me not have to use `:noh`

Call :noh command at InsertEnter autocmd
You may be interested in the vim-cool plugin, which uses InsertEnter and CursorMoved autocmds to automatically disable search highlighting after you're done with the search.
