Have you heard of Veilid? It’s sort of envisioned as a framework for building encrypted distributed/federated apps. It’s early days and in active development, but the idea and goals of it remind me of the issues you raised.

Some other ideas revolt time to time on my head : community run local data centers(kind of libraries) or providing simple content services from your home internet connection (that's why i loved this idea: https://gitlab.com/veilid/veilid). Your personal digital human(but maybe AI assisted) curators, all part of a idealized "virtual solar punk world", sustainable, private and healthier with humans put first, far from the toxic fascination with disruption , profit, perpetual and global growth and all of the startup toxic crap, we have everything we just have to glue it, and i see people thirsty for a digital world like that.

its not the first time i hear about feeling healthier after moving to the feediverse. i have my own set of scripts and mini apps running on top puppeteer with a local llamacpp for summaries and recommendations, its not perfect but im planning to put more effort on this and maybe look for OSS projects that are aiming at that (ie. (*arr suites, nostr, activitypub, veilid).) and offer that to friends and family members to see if they like the idea, also i have a name for all those scripts: "not a browser" the web without HTML CSS and JS served along with the data, just provide the data, how you displayed, its the user my concern.

    > Veilid is a peer-to-peer network and application framework released by the Cult of the Dead Cow on August 11, 2023, at DEF CON 31. Described by its authors as "like Tor, but for apps", it is written in Rust, and runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, Android, iOS, and in-browser WASM. VeilidChat is a secure messaging application built on Veilid.

    > Veilid is an open-source, peer-to-peer, mobile-first, networked application framework.

    > The framework is conceptually similar to IPFS and Tor, but faster and designed from the ground-up to provide all services over a privately routed network.

    > The framework enables development of fully-distributed applications without a 'blockchain' or a 'transactional layer' at their base.

    > The framework can be included as part of user-facing applications or run as a 'headless node' for power users who wish to help build the network.

a friendly reminder that (a) ipfs is only as alive as there are seeders and (b) seeders ips are public just like bittorrent

There was a recent Cult of the Dead Cow release that claims "encrypt all the things, Tor but for phones" or some such but I haven't studied it to know how much is aspirational https://gitlab.com/veilid/veilid#welcome-to-veilid https://twitter.com/VeilidNetwork https://nitter.net/VeilidNetwork
