Do I need zsys or are there alternatives?

I ended up trying this and it worked almost flawlessly (issue with auto-selecting apt mirrors, but easily fixed).

zfsbootmenu - ZFS Bootloader for root-on-ZFS systems with support for snapshots and native full disk encryption
void-mklive - The Void Linux live image maker
archiso-zfs - Easily load ZFS kernel module on any Archiso.
mkinitcpio-ykfde - Full disk encryption with Yubikey (Yubico key)
