Weekly Vim tips and tricks thread! #24
For those who wish to preview substitutions as they type à la Neovim inccommand, there's markonm/traces.vim.
- Why keeps you using vim vs neovim?
- How would I wrap a word, prefix it, and finally suffix it?
-
multiple cursors
Neovim has this built in with set inccommand=split, which is inspired by traces.vim, I believe.
-
What is the window called that comes up when you press q:
There's also markonm/traces.vim: Range, pattern and substitute preview for Vim
-
Would you be interested in multicursor support for Neovim?
Do you know traces.vim?
-
How to not ask for regex solutions all the time?
There is also https://github.com/markonm/traces.vim that shows the changes made by :substitute interactively.
-
I still want multiple cursors and I’ve been using Vim/neovim for 8 years!
Perhaps you mean traces.vim? I find it extends live feedback on substitutions and whatnot quite well. Useful for a lot of typical cases where you would expect native Vim/Neovim to provide live feedback but doesn’t. Also, I find the “Feature comparison” table for traces to be modest: it is even better / native is lacking.

Newbie question about :s
May want to use 'incsearch' & 'hlsearch' to help show patterns as you build them with /. Neovim will show substitution previews ('inccommand') and traces.vim will work with Vim.
-
Is there a plugin that makes searching and replacing stuff in vim easier?
The traces.vim plugin can help show substitution previews. Neovim may want to look at :h 'inccommand'

What are some plugins that you can't live without?

[nvim-hlslens] doesn't work
I've configured nvim-hlslens as https://github.com/kevinhwang91/nvim-hlslens shown, using Minimal configuration, but I could not achieve what the other has shown in https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/17562139/144654751-0d439610-b913-4e72-b473-e49db3317fab.mp4
-
search index
That's part of noice.nvim, but you could also use something like https://github.com/kevinhwang91/nvim-hlslens to get a similar effect
-
Search with cmdheight = 0
kevinhwang91/nvim-hlslens might help with this specific problem
-
Command line search (/, ?) autocomplete
The plugin I found for this function is cmd2.vim: https://github.com/gelguy/Cmd2.vim, but this is from 2015, doesn't really support nvim, and conflicts with nvim-hlslens which I use.
-
search results: inline count + blink - a simple function
I do use nvim-hlslens to count search result occurence. What's hindering me to use your function right now is hlslens' integration with nvim-scrollbar
-
What is the coolest, unknown(-ish) plugin that you're using that other people could benefit from?
nvim-hlslens: shows indexed search using virtual text, better ux than vim-anzu and other similar plugins.
-
Zero width window issue with nvim-hlslens
I just recently discovered kevinhwang91/nvim-hlslens, and gave it a go. After a bit I encountered a very specific and annoying bug:
-
I must be missing something
nvim-hlslens: Humanized UI for search results with high performance, I'm the author.
-
[Help] show the full number of search occurrences instead of >99
Not exactly about fixing Vim's original match indicator, but from my experience, nvim-hlslens can show the total number of matches even if it's pretty big. I believe it's fine as long as the number is smaller than 100k.
