While I haven't used it since my new company doesn't use MS SQL, Microsoft has their own library for this.

Yeah, I would think you would too. What library are you using to connect to the db? https://github.com/microsoft/mssql-django this one seems to support jsonfields

Ansible Tower with SQL DB
So going with non postures would invalidate support today, note next version of tower will be postgresql 12, now that being said MS has been developing Azure MSSQL for Tower. https://github.com/microsoft/mssql-django
