What files can I install on Desktop mode? (.DEB, .RPM, etc)
Reason is, that valves os is based on arch linux, but they locked all the system partitions down to read only. You can unlock them or use tools to lay a fake redirect layer over them (see: https://github.com/ValShaped/rwfus), but thats advanced users stuff.

i installed holoiso on my steamdeck as i wanted a readwrite fs, and now that i installed some packages i need such as orca, gamescope is broken

My full desktop mode rice. Replaced KDE with i3 and mapped everything I need to use it to controls with steam input.
I'm using rwfus to create an overlayfs over the rootfs so that packages and other changes persist across updates

For anyone who enjoys Magic: The Gathering, a gem from years ago!
Otherwise, if you've set a password for sudo command usage and instead want to use the simpler pacman command (sudo pacman -S jre-openjdk) to install the JRE, you can either disable the filesystem's read-only access (sudo steamos-readonly disable / sudo steamos-readonly enable) or use the script from this GitHub page to backup and restore your pacman installations after each SteamOS update.

Any success running MTG Forge on Steam Deck?
While I continue to use the /opt JRE installation on my Steam Deck, since then I've found a set of scripts that includes a way to backup and restore the list of applications installed via pacman as a means of reinstalling them after SteamOS updates remove them, which has the benefit of being able to update the JRE via pacman at the cost of needing to repeatedly restore the installation.
