Show HN: Managed GitHub Actions Runners for AWS
Yeah this is a good option if you'd like something to deploy yourself! You can also build an AMI from GitHub's upstream image definition (https://github.com/actions/runner-images/tree/main/images/ub...) if you'd like it to match what's available in GitHub-hosted Actions.
With Depot, we're moving towards deeper performance optimizations and observability than vanilla GitHub runners - we've integrated the runners with a cache storage cluster for instance, and we're working on deeper integration with the compute platform that we built for distributed container image builds - as well as expanding the types of builds we can process beyond Actions and Docker, for instance.
But different options will be better for different folks, and the `philips-labs` project is good at what it does.

We Executed a Critical Supply Chain Attack on PyTorch
Whoa, there's a lot of stuff in there [1] that gets installed straight from vendors, without pinning content checksums to a value known-good to Github.
I get it, they want to have the latest versions instead of depending on how long Ubuntu (or, worse, Debian) package maintainers take to package stuff into their mainline repositories... but this attack surface is nuts.

Terraform module for scalable GitHub action runners on AWS
I had a similar experience with ARC (actions-runner-controller).
One of the machines in the fleet failed to sync its clock via NTP. Once a job X got scheduled to it, the runner pod failed authentication due to incorrect clock time, and then the whole ARC system started to behave incorrectly: job X was stuck without runners, until another workflow job Y was created, and then X got run but Y became stuck. There were also other wierd behaviors like this so I eventually rebuilt everything based on VMs and stopped using ARC.
Using VMs also allowed me to support the use of the official runner images [0], which is good for compatibility.
I feel more people would benefit from managed "self-hosted" runners, so I started DimeRun [1] to provide cheaper GHA runners for people who don't have the time/willingness to troubleshoot low-level infra issues.

Question on using Linux Self Hosted Agents with VMSS
Used https://github.com/actions/runner-images to get the packages needed for Ubuntu 22.04 As the packer requires a builder, I used "null" builder to set it as localhost ref: https://developer.hashicorp.com/packer/docs/builders/null (It was way difficult to figure it out the 1st time) I had to modify the .pkr.hcl file to pick my provisioners. I could not understand the use of /opt/hostedtoolcache folder (which I did later)

Using Kaniko to Build and Publish container image with Github action on Github Self-hosted Runners
To set-up the self-hosted runner, an Action Runner Controller (ARC) and Runner scale sets application will be installed via helm. This post will be using Azure Kubernetes Service and ARC that is officialy maintained by Github. There is another ARC that is maintained by the community. You can follow the discussion where github adopted the ARC project into a full Github product here

Show HN: DimeRun v2 – Run GitHub Actions on AWS EC2
Before this we were using https://github.com/actions/actions-runner-controller but that's running on K8s instead of VMs. So along with common limitations of running CI jos in K8s/container, it cannot have exactly the same environment as the official GitHub runners. Maintaining a K8s cluster was also very difficult.

Best CI/CD for AWS services?
Almost all of our cicd, builds run on GitHub. I'm talking cypress tests, deployments via terraform and helm to over 25 environments, all backend tests, daily test runs etc. Overall we were racking up a cost of almost 20k on GitHub. With the ARC deployed and using spot instances I think our total infrastructure costs went up about 4-5k even though we added more actions. If we switched back to their runners we'd probably be around 25k at this point.

You need to use the steps in the repo instead of the steps on the docs if you're using enterprise server.

Honestly not a fan of Github docs.....I feel like the ones in the repo are much clearer and easier to understand/read.

How much work does it take to operate a self-hosted GitHub runners?
Its pretty easy to set up honestly. Deploy this on your k8s cluster https://github.com/actions/actions-runner-controller and a runnerDeployment and youre good to go.

AKS cluster w/ GitHub App and Actions Runner Controller
I'm convinced one of (or a combination) of things is happening here in regards to authentication. This GH enterprise account is configured with SAML. I feel like that is a valid data point. I'm using https://github.com/actions/actions-runner-controller as a reference guide for what I should be doing. I suspect whoever is Owner of this organization has modified what I can do as a user. The steps in the doc where I can actually Install the Application isn't available to me. When configuring the GitHub App I'm given two options. I select the option for "this account only" knowing the documentation says it is possible to use this Github App with a repo in the Organization as long as I have Admin privileges or I'm the owner.
