ESXi does not detect NIC despite having the correct Intel driver installed

In my case, it was: RTL8125. Which lead me to this driver on GitHub (realganfan/r8125-esxi). You can build it yourself or download one of the latest prebuilt Releases.

Is VirtualBox still really bad with Windows 9x?
Now you have two solutions: either use VMware and get responsive graphics and sound almost out of the box (once again, no 3d) or go with Virtual Box and the experimental Softgpu. For sound, you will have to change the sound card to an AC97 and fetch the drivers for it.

Having issues getting windows 98 to function properly
there are no guest additions for Win 9x (you don't really need them) you can sue SoftGPU if you need 3D but you need to pay attention to the instructions. https://github.com/JHRobotics/softgpu
