Recommended galleries for an artist portfolio?
I stumbled upon ProGallery and it looked like the perfect solution, but I had a hard time making it work with Astro. Eventually I made it work on the website so it shows up, but the expand on click functionality doesn't currently work in their playground nor in my website, and I don't quite know how to make it work (details: apart from telling you to use a certain property which they don't clarify where to put, they also say to use a certain different component, ExpandableProGallery, but I couldn't find that on what I downloaded from npm so I'm quite lost on how to make it work)

How to dynamically render a masonry layout of images, while preserving aspect ratio?
Use a library, there are many small issues with these renders and doing them right will make it look much better. My favorite is the pro-gallery https://github.com/wix/pro-gallery/ Disclaimer, I wrote it :)

Creating smoother CSS transitions with Animate CSS Grid
As of this writing, nearly all of the CSS grid properties are included in the Animatable CSS Properties. However, for this article, we will not animate the grid properties by writing CSS animation for our transitions. Instead, we’ll use the Animate CSS Grid open source package.

how can i achieve this style of responsivness?
False, you can do it with css animation, no need to bloat the website with big framework for such an easy task: https://github.com/aholachek/animate-css-grid
