The number of mentions indicates the total number of mentions that we've tracked plus the number of user suggested alternatives.
Stars - the number of stars that a project has on GitHub. Growth - month over month growth in stars.
Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.
For example, an activity of 9.0 indicates that a project is amongst the top 10% of the most actively developed projects that we are tracking.

Which MATLAB course to take for undecided
Paying for code doesn't make it any less prone to bugs. If Python can be trusted to handle observations from the James Webb Space Telescope, it can probably be trusted for other, more terrestrial applications. In any case, since it is open-source, you can always inspect the source code yourself to verify what it is doing.

A Software Glitch Forced the Webb Space Telescope Into Safe Mode. The $10 billion observatory didn’t collect many images in December, due to a now-resolved software issue.
Relevant: because it's a public science project, a lot of the repositories are open source https://github.com/spacetelescope/jwst
