The number of mentions indicates the total number of mentions that we've tracked plus the number of user suggested alternatives.

Creating regions within a buffer
Otherwise if you really want to do what you are writing look at polymode, perhaps you can do something similar to what you ask, but I am not sure for the vertical split.

If you find yourself in need of combining major modes, current way of doing it is either via org-mode (literal programming) or with polymode. I don't know of better way.
