Question for the creator
It's based on the source code of Pixel Dungeon by Watabou.
-
Can I take free app game source code add my own art and launch it in the App Store for profit?
I have seen at least one FOSS game do this. Shattered Pixel Dungeon is a derivative of Pixel Dungeon that is being sold on Steam. The original game is under the GNU General Public License v3.0.

I can't think about another video game using Java. I mean, there WILL be more but i haven't saw them.
pixel dungeon was written in java https://github.com/watabou/pixel-dungeon

Why is open source game-dev not a thing?
There's like a hundred versions on Pixel Dungeon on various stores because it's just a completely open source project.
- I'm creating "Game Codebase Tours" – source code walkthroughs of finished game projects – in order to help new devs learn how a finished game is put together. Would anyone be interested?
-
Working on a port of my favorite mobile game, Pixel Dungeon to Roblox. Map generation is 100% procedural.
The original game is completely open-source under the GNU license, it even has several spin-off's with very active communities. I reached out to the original creator for permission just to be 100% sure and he said its cool and was even interested in seeing the final product.
- Can i take someone else's game and make my own version?
-
I want to make a roguelike similar to Pixel Dungeon in Unity. What's the best tutorial to get started?
The Pixel Dungeon source code is publicly available. It's written in Java, which is relatively easy to understand if you know C#. I'm not suggesting that you try to port to Unity, but it can be a good reference.

What programming language did Watabou use to make it?
It's Java, it's open source, and it's right here: https://github.com/watabou/pixel-dungeon

Are y’all really fluent in 6 program languages
Some of my code is here: https://github.com/JustinLloyd/invaders (Typescript with some HTML/CSS for browser) that is used on my C.V. website here: https://justin-lloyd.com/
-
Why is open source game-dev not a thing?
My open source game projects are generally one shots, e.g. https://github.com/JustinLloyd/invaders requiring very little in the way of updates because I don't have the time to commit to ongoing maintenance.

I wrote a 1980s-arcade-style invaders game to fulfill a childhood dream
These sorts of games are incredibly fun to write in modern languages, especially if you are given a canvas and the ability to blit graphics around without much concern for memory usage or blit speed.
Obligatory self-promotion: https://justin-lloyd.com/ which is my C.V. site that includes a 1970's-era space invaders style game based on the portable Galaxy Invaders 1000 game.
https://github.com/JustinLloyd/invaders
"Invaders from 78" is written in Typescript, implements a small ECS framework, uses Pixi for canvas rendering, and is event driven. No audio because, well... it's a C.V. website. It also doesn't work on mobile because the audience numbers for mobile visitors to my C.V. website is near enough zero that it would be wasted effort. Please excuse any front-end sins I may have committed because I generally don't do front-end web dev.
