Maybe it would be better to use a payment model similar to ReC98, in which people pay for development as it happens. So, there could be a goal of however much a particular piece of hardware costs, and only once that goal is hit does development for that device start. After development for that device finishes, another goal could be set for the cost of that development, and then the update for that device would only be released for that goal is hit. If people don't pay very much, then while waiting for the next goal, the developer could do other things that are more sure to make money.
