Personally, I'll also be watching picostation, an open source ODE for the PS1. It's not ready for everyday playing, but it looks pretty promising.

If you want to use a PS1 instead of a PS2 with FMCB then you can use an arduino with PSNee : https://github.com/kalymos/PsNee

Odd issue, no background music
Anyway, since this modchip does not seem to be the best for some later titles, I neatly removed this and installed the PsNee ( https://github.com/kalymos/PsNee ) as I had an Arduino Uno kicking around (not going to use this permanently, too large) to test burnt titles.
