I'm reminded of the history of the term "open source" itself.
It came from Eric S Raymond and other folks to counter Free Software/GPL in a more commercially minded way.
I think Richard Stallman said it meant "you can view the source" without necessarily granting any other rights.
I think since then it has been more defined, but there seem to be hidden gotcha's possible. Like maybe https://github.com/rapi3/pfsense-is-closed-source

Wanted to view what you guys think of this (related to pfsense)
Not trying to start drama. Genuinely curious about this. Is it true that pfsense cannot be built from source? Any one knowledegable enough care to explain if this is indeed true?

Netgate announced their closed-source pfSense firewall variant with paywall called pfSense Plus.
Actually pfsense CE is not open source, only free. They use open source (thats what they refer to when calling it open source) but they do not open source their changes or upstream them: https://github.com/doktornotor/pfsense-still-closedsource
