Don't Purge
I tend to use Google Drive to host things I share with people who are not tech savvy enough to use git (or things I just want to be accessible via a hyperlink). I actually have a Google Colab notebook that syncs a Google drive folder with a git repo (& vice versa) that I can share with you if you're interested. I find that keeping it synced between both makes it much easier for me to access my writing (with the bonus that it's backed up in a minimum of 3 places, 2 of which are offsite). I'm also in the process of setting up a repo that uses GitHub actions & pandoc/LaTeX to automatically typeset my Markdown files into a PDF. Basically I'm trying to automate as much of the fiddly technical bullshit so I can focus on the creativity side of things.

Pandoc
You can inline LaTeX chapter/section break commands even when processing Markdown, and in several ways (dropping \newpage directly in the content before chapters, using header templates, as YAML metadata in the Markdown file, even on the command line).
Google has many examples; one's here using a header file: https://medium.com/@sydasif78/book-creation-with-pandoc-and-...
More are here, including an example using the header-includes YAML metadata param: https://github.com/Wandmalfarbe/pandoc-latex-template/issues...

Tell HN: Modern Is Not Better
Really? Should work with any OpenType font. Are you generating in a language that doesn't use roman-ish alphabet? You're not wrong that working with TeX can involve a lot of yak shaving in general. Sometimes finding the right template can solve a lot of problems. I use Eisvogel. https://github.com/Wandmalfarbe/pandoc-latex-template

PM wants something that "looks better than a Word doc"
If you really want to go that route, take a look at pandoc and ping me if you have questions. Pandoc in combination with the Eisvogel LaTeX template can be a quick way to get a really good-looking doc.

Exporting notes as academic thesis & papers!
I looked for pandoc templates, and found "eisvogel" (https://github.com/Wandmalfarbe/pandoc-latex-template) although I still did not like how it rendered as I wanted it to look like a dissertation.
