We do write a lot of Python and C++ code to do data management and make new simulations. Like this open source framework and its related list of plugins. Actually there is a whole list of open source nuclear related software.

I think of software engineering like motor oil. You can apply it across a wide variety of contexts, but it's by no means the engine.
