Self-hosting is a viable choice, even with a standard home network contract at zero cost. There are free DynDNS services to use like afraid.org (SDF with MetaARPA includes it) and free outbound SMTP relay services (to prevent spam filters from major providers like M$ and Google from blocking your IP), like DuoCircle. My mail server runs notqmail on NetBSD-current on a Raspberry Pi 4.
