Why isn't using sidebars to display information more popular?
Great point, it’s exactly why I added a scratchpad feature to https://github.com/shortcuts/no-neck-pain.nvim to leverage the empty side buffers as scratch pads (https://github.com/shortcuts/no-neck-pain.nvim/wiki/Showcase#side-buffer-as-scratch-pad)

Using Neovim to take notes
If I may join the discussion on this topic, I've recently added a scratchpad feature to my plugin, which in your case, would allow you to take notes while taking notes

Speaking of your empty left terminal, [I just added this earlier today](https://github.com/shortcuts/no-neck-pain.nvim/pull/69) which only adds the side buffers when there's enough space, so if you have the plugin enabled, you don't have to worry about opening an empty window, the plugin thinks about it for you :)

Why isn't using sidebars to display information more popular?
i experimented with generalizing the code for https://github.com/goolord/alpha-nvim for the express purpose of writing sidebars / fuzzy finders etc with the ui builder dsl here https://github.com/goolord/gamma-ui-nvim but I never got around to fleshing it out.
