Show HN: I made a game to improve my typing speed
It's gotta be fun, and Typing for the Dead is a good one.
https://store.steampowered.com/agecheck/app/246580/
More recently though, there's https://monkeytype.com/ and https://play.typeracer.com/ which are fun little breaks during the day.

really struggling with picking up touch typing and feeling horrible about it.
Check out these words. These are 10 words from the English 1k word list on monkeytype.com

Been at this for 6 months, need advice
Try a small change and sometimes a drastic one (like dropping a column or row) and mash keybr.com and monkeytype.com until it feels natural, or not then revert. And if I revert I often try again a few weeks later...

What is your average typing speed?
Average typing speed when typing a >50 word long quote. If you don't know your average typing speed, you can test yourself at https://monkeytype.com/.

Why my neovim lags so much?
It works normal in small projects but when I open for example monkeytype and edit a file it lags so much that sometime it crashes.

Keyboard Shortcut Database Website
I had a really useful website bookmarked in the past, which let you enter a keyboard shortcut and see what programs used that same shortcut. It was really helpful if I needed to create a keyboard shortcut that I knew wouldn't conflict with Windows or any other programs I used. I feel like the site's color scheme was dark gray and yellow/orange, similar to monkeytype.com, but I could be misremembering.

Show HN: I automated 1/2 of my typing
If you are a 2 finger typist and also think people are "obsessing over WPM" because they're wanting to utilize their own tools to the fullest advantage, that sounds like some mental block kind of thing.
If you can type at least 80 consistently then thats probably would I imagine the dividing line is between "flow/concentration not breaking" and "breaks constantly"
Try a 50 word monkeytype https://monkeytype.com/

Any advice for learning a new layout?
I use Colemak Club along with Monkey Type and Keybr. They each have their strengths, so I cycle through them each time I sit down to practice. What I like about Colemak Club is that you can limit your work to the homerow at first, then start adding in key pairs from there. You also get to type real words, which I find helpful.

Just switched to Colemak-DH, this post title took me ages to type
I did use https://gnusenpai.net/colemakclub, which is a fork of Colemak Academy with the correct Colemak-DH layout

Making the layout change
I recently built my first split ergo mech board. In part, it was a way to improve my WFH setup and hopefully encourage me to (finally) learn touch typing with an alternate layout (colemak-dh). I realize it's only been a couple of weeks, and I have been trying some Colemak club practice (which is great) but between life/summer/kids/hobbies, it's a real struggle to make progress and I find myself pulling out my old dell membrane keyboard (which now feels disgusting) whenever I need to just "get something done."

Virtual Venerable Vestments - Weekly Discussion Thread, May 8th, 2023
No, first time reading about that method, I mostly read the learn section in the Colemak website and started practicing in this website that has all the most well known layouts, including the one I'm planning to use once I fully transition to Colemak

Anyone have experience with Neovim and Colemak or Devorak keyboard layout?
I opted for the slow learning option to keep my productivity up. I practice for about 30 mins most days on colemak club, keybr, and monkey type. The rest of the day I'll switch between using my new keyboard some of the time, but my old keyboard most of the time. My old keyboard is still qwerty. Switching like this will take longer to get up to speed on my new keyboard, but I can continue to be productive.
- Practice Colemak, Tarmak, Workman, Canary, and custom layouts on ANSI, ISO, or Ortho

Any common mistakes to avoid when switching to Colemak?
Don't use Colemak Academy for DH; its key diagram is incorrect (it doesn't have the angle mod). Colemak Club is a fork of Colemak Academy which uses the correct key diagram, and it's also actively maintained.

How long does it take to learn a new layout?
I started learning Colemak-DH from qwerty in July and got to 50wpm by October. I did all of the lessons on Colemak Club to 35wpm or so before doing about 0.5h of monkeytype a day.
