    Thanks everyone for the helpful replies! I think I'll mainly use the method 7890yuiop and jackson15j mentioned, involving putting a common configuration in .emacs.d and using .emacs for things specific to the machine. modular-config also looks quite nice.     I am the maintainer of modular-config.el. I created this package out of my own necessity for dividing my emacs configuration file into multiple files. At this moment, I am feeling the need to make it more robust and optimized.
