A lightweight, simple, fast, feature-filled, text editor written in C, and Lua
Here's another one with a very small footprint:
https://github.com/DigitalMars/med
It's the one I use every day. The executable on Windows is a little over a meg. It also works on Linux and Mac.

I Still Use Plain Text for Everything.
I fixed my editor so that it recognizes URLs, and underlines them. Clicking on one brings up a browser on that site. I should have done that 20 years ago.
No special syntax is required. It just works. I've since been adding URLs in comments all over my code, for references. It's marvelous.
It could be extended to recognize filename.jpg and filename.mp3 to display or play those files, too. Again with no special syntax whatsoever. It just works.

The Lost Apps of the 80s
I still use microEmacs, which floated around the intertoobs in the 1980s. Of course, I've modified it substantially over the years, most recently adding color syntax highlighting and Unicode.
D version:
https://github.com/DigitalMars/med
C version:
https://github.com/DigitalMars/me
The "extension language" is it's so easy to just add some code and recompile it, there's no point in adding an extension language.
I like microEmacs a lot because I can use it remotely over a tty interface.

Hecto: Build your own text editor in Rust
Doing one yourself is fun. MicroEmacs drifted around NNTP in the 80s, and I snagged a copy and began modifying it to taste. I've been using it ever since. The latest version was ported to D:
https://github.com/DigitalMars/med
It's a very easy editor to understand and extend.

Double-Entry Bookkeeping as a Directed Graph
I'm surprised that there is no mentions of a great hacker-friendly plain-text accounting software called `ledger` https://ledger-cli.org/ in this thread. It has amazing documentation when it comes to understanding basic principles of double-entry bookkeeping and goes through many typical situations and usecases. There are also several forks, most popular and advanced is `hledger` https://hledger.org/ (h is for Haskell), which provides some neat features out of the box, such as a simple web interface. All of them are very primitive compared to "professional" accounting software, but in return it offers great opportunities for hacking around while ensuring validity of your books.

Ledger
I've been using hledger[1] - similar tool but has more features like balance sheet, income statement generation with a plain text file for the last 3 years and it's been working out great. Before that I used iBank (rebranded as Banktivity) and don't miss it at all.

Show HN: Just.sh – compiler that turns Justfiles into portable shell scripts
I can offer this (warning, crufty real-world scripts ahead!): these [make](https://github.com/simonmichael/hledger/blob/137d825/Makefil...) [files](https://github.com/simonmichael/hledger/blob/137d825/Makefil...) and this [bash script](https://github.com/simonmichael/hledger/blob/a3c300b/bake) have been replaced by this roughly equivalent [Justfile](https://github.com/simonmichael/hledger/blob/137d825/Justfil...) (some old things were commented out, some new things were added).
I'm only a few weeks in, and just has its own learning curve, but I'm very pleased overall. Cognitive load is down, usability is up, robustness is up.
