This is why I always pre-type my comments in Notepad++, which also has a markdown extension that includes some syntax highlighting for things like headers, bold, italics, lists, links, and even /u/ tags (which was surprising but probably just a result of the / at the beginning). This lets you see what's going to come out in reddit's markdown pretty nicely.
