What are best tools for ground up bitcoin/lightning node?
I like RTL, services like loopd for channel rebalancing or if you're so inclined, the whole lightning terminal package. I love jochen's mempool explorer (source code) when estimating fees. I use blockstream's block explorer esplora (source) for my block explorer. There's so many fun tools out there I can't even come close to naming them all.

My own scripts to run LND in my home lab using Ansible
Very nice! To get the Lightning Labs add-on services going, you might consider using Lightning Terminal because it bundles all 3 (loopd, poold, faraday) in addition to the Terminal UI: https://github.com/lightninglabs/lightning-terminal

Newbie Question - Wallets
Okay if custody of your own coins is priority for you, and you don't want to run a node straight away, I guess my recommendation is Zap Desktop. You can also get it from its github page. Basically it's running an lnd node in the background, but it presents a nice GUI as a front end.
- I've been out a couple of years, anyone was here?

My reply to people who tell me to “just use lightning”
There are various wallets for the desktop, but I never used one. I think Electrum has Lightning intergration, there is also Zap (https://github.com/LN-Zap/zap-desktop) I use a https://github.com/rootzoll/raspiblitz with Zap mobile wallet connecting to the node for payments (there is an app and desktop version).

money stuck in Zap?
I would recommend opening an issue in their GitHub repository https://github.com/LN-Zap/zap-desktop/issues.
