FOSS Audiobook apps
Both apps require you to have audiobooks as files and download them in an accessible format. If you have audible audiobooks, you need to convert those to an open format first using something like AAX2MP3 + audible-activator

aax to mp4 or mp3
Libation author here. Libation reads directly from your audible account and downloads/decrypts in one step. No aax, just straight to m4b. There's also a setting to convert to mp3 instead. It cannot take existing aax files and do this. inAudible can target aax files directly but it's getting a bit long in the tooth so it's not as reliable as it used to be. I've never tried aaxtomp3.

Converting .aaxc files to mb4
This: https://github.com/KrumpetPirate/AAXtoMP3 + your audible key (that you can get from https://github.com/mkb79/audible-cli) is all you need.

Audible books disappearing?
AAXtoMP3 is the tool you need for that, but if you have a linux system (or if you are willing to set the windows-subsystem for linux up) you can streamline this process greatly

Backup my audiobooks from Audible/Kobo?
I personally use audible-cli to download files from audible and AAXtoMP3 to decrypt them. Don't know anything about Kobo. audible-cli: https://github.com/mkb79/audible-cli AAXtoMP3: https://github.com/KrumpetPirate/AAXtoMP3

Backing up Audible purchases?
I use AAXtoMP3. You'll need to authcode to decrypt the aax files, with the authcode you could also just use ffmpeg with ffmpeg -activation_bytes XXXXXXXX -i input.aax -c copy output.m4b to decrypt it, its also much faster than using something that splits the files into separate chapters

AAXtoMP3 might be an alternative here. It does what the name says pretty reliably

Real hidden gems when it comes to self hosting
You can use https://github.com/inAudible-NG/audible-activator, which is what OpenAudible supposedly stole their code from. And to convert the aax files you can use https://github.com/KrumpetPirate/AAXtoMP3.
