Show HN: Year in Text (open-source Spotify-Wrapped for iMessage)
Left on Read is an open-source iMessage analyzer for Mac Desktop that I helped build. Learn your top words, emojis, group chats, contacts, and relive your funniest messages. We also built a "Your Year in Texts" experience (think 'Spotify Wrapped' for iMessage). No data ever leaves your computer and we are proudly open-source: https://github.com/Left-on-Read/leftonread
The app is free to try, but in order to keep the lights on, we charge $2.99/month for premium features (such as filtering and sentiment analysis charts).
Left on Read works by copying the chat.db sqlite file on your Mac found at ~/Library/Messages. This is why we need request full disk access. We then run queries on it and display graphs with react chart.js.
We've happily seen a lot of people entertained by our app thanks to some viral Reddit and Tik Tok posts that we've done.
We built this project for fun, so thanks for your support and any feedback is welcome.

Message frequency by daytime for some of my chats [OC]
I get your concern. We take privacy and security super super seriously, which is why the app is entirely open-source. In other words, you can see all the code that the app uses. Let me know if any more questions: https://github.com/Left-on-Read/leftonread

I built an open-source text message analyzer - AMA!
The short answer: the electron app itself took about 1.5 months with two people working on it full-time to get to a “minimum awesome product” state. Our Github contribution graph would probably tell the most accurate story.

[OC] Texting Habits with my Girlfriend Post-Long Distance
Ah, so I filter out traditional stop words - all the code for this is open-source and can be downloaded as a Desktop app found here.

Texting Habits with my Girlfriend Post-Long Distance
To visualize this data, I used my own app, Left on Read. My friend and I ended up reworking the original web-based platform into an open-sourced desktop app that runs offline - security & privacy first! You can check out the code here on Github

I built an open-source Spotify Wrapped for Text Messages
This project is a ton of fun, so wanted to share! Using Electron, React, Typescript, and sqlite, I built an open-source Desktop app that analyzes iMessages and curates a Spotify wrapped-like experience. You can download it here or check us out on github. Let me know if any qs. It’s entirely open-source and we do not store your data. The beauty of a Desktop app: the data never leaves your computer!

Is there a way to make ubuntu 23.10 think it has a monitor connected when headless?
Or if you are an experienced user of your operating system, you can find solutions on how to create a virtual display without a need for Virtual Display Adapter in the following link: https://github.com/pavlobu/deskreen/discussions/86
- Deskreen – turn any device into a secondary screen

Android 14 adds support for using your smartphone as a webcam
Use a vnc client on your android device and setup a virtual monitor on your desktop that is really a vnc server.
I know how to do that with Sway and swayvnc on wayland, as well as with xorg.

This is particularly helpful to people using asahi linux and wanting to connect an external monitor. That can be done with something as simple as a raspberry pi.
EDIT: apparently this project help achieving the same thing on different OS but using webRTC and a browser:

Just wondering if I can run sillytavern or pygmalion(forgot which is which) on my pc and use my phone to connect to it then use tavernAI (the interface) on my phone?
Screen sharing apps are good for this. You can access your pc from your phones browser and local pc IP. https://github.com/pavlobu/deskreen is free one i use.
- How can I create a second virtual monitor on my steamdeck without needing to plug in a usbc alt dummymonitor plug ?

How can i create a virtual display on X11? [Amd]
No it is not necessary. The screen mirroring and sharing single application window functionality of Deskreen are working without any need for Virtual Display Adapter. The Virtual Display Plug is needed only if you want to extend your computer desktop to have a full secondary screen experience with Deskreen. Or if you are an experienced user of your operating system, you can find solutions on how to create a virtual display without a need for Virtual Display Adapter in the following link: https://github.com/pavlobu/deskreen/discussions/86

Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
I use Deskreen with Windows, it has a Linux version that probably works similarly. I think it leverages browser streaming tech.
https://deskreen.com/
Easiest way to get it working is with a dummy plug, but maybe there's more options on Linux to fake a display in software.
What are some alternatives?
electron-react-boilerplate - A Foundation for Scalable Cross-Platform Apps
VirtScreen - Make your iPad/tablet/computer into a secondary monitor on Linux.
bluebubbles-server - Server for forwarding iMessages to clients within the BlueBubbles App ecosystem
Weylus - Use your tablet as graphic tablet/touch screen on your computer.
captivate - Captivate Lighting & Visual Synth
scrcpy - Display and control your Android device
electron-react-webpack-typescript-2024 - Electron React Webpack Typescript Boilerplate with Custom Window and Titlebar Menus.
BetterDummy - Unlock your displays on your Mac! Smooth scaling, HiDPI unlock, XDR/HDR extra brightness upscale, DDC, brightness and dimming, dummy displays, PIP and lots more! [Moved to: https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay]
virtual-display-linux - Create virtual display / monitor on linux OS for extended display via teamviewer or vnc server without any real Monitor is Plugged In.
barrier - Open-source KVM software
sway - i3-compatible Wayland compositor
evdi - Extensible Virtual Display Interface
