Calibre Replacement Considerations
I googled it and it seems that koreader has a selfhostable server that can be used to sync reading positions across devices
https://github.com/koreader/koreader-sync-server
I used koreader years ago. I'll give it a try again. If I like it I'll download the server and check if I can make it work.

KoReader ProgressSync Kobo and Pocketbook
You need a koreader-sync-server. I think the default public server works, but you can also host your own.

Sync server
I recently discovered the Koreader app. I also found the koreader-sync-server https://github.com/koreader/koreader-sync-server, but it has not been updated for a very long time. I am just wondering if it is safe to use this container behind the nginx-proxy-manager?

Kobo Libra 2 vs Boox Poke 3 vs PocketBook Touch Lux 3
RE:device syncing, that is correct! KOReader does sync progress across devices. You can even self-host the sync server (GitHub).
- Soon to be Boox user. Researching for workflows/apps.
- Looking for a self hosted ebook solution that syncs progress between devices

Need advice on a ebook reader that syncs reading progress
Its syncing functionality sends hashes to the sync server instead of filenames so it's better from a privacy perspective. You can also set up your own sync server if you wish.

Sync uploaded EPUB book progress across Kobo readers?
It may perhaps be possible if you install koreader on your kobo https://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/2019/02/16/easily-install-koreader-and-plato-on-your-kobo-ereader-with-one-click/ and set up https://github.com/koreader/koreader-sync-server so it would take some effort. You would of course need to use koreader on your phone as well which you can get from f-droid https://f-droid.org/

Calibre Replacement Considerations
There was a time, when I was so fed up of the Calibre being so bloated, while all I needed was just a convert capabilities, that I started to rip off parts of the Calibre, clean it up, make things simpler, removing unnecessary things and trying to understand what is happening behind the conversion, resulting with ebook-converter[1], which simply do the conversion, without all the management/downloading rss/editing/what have you. It is usable right now, but I'd say it's still somewhere in between alpha and beta stage. You could give it a shot.
