I think regardless of the side, you won't be able to insert switches since it is covering the hole. if you have an option, i think there are a bunch of pre-configured mx switch footprints made available by foostan (check out their footprint repository for inspiration). They definitely do go on the back though, opposite of where the switches go.

For the actual animation, I just copied the code from https://github.com/aseiger/qmk_firmware/tree/aseiger_dev/keyboards/gingham/keymaps/aseiger_bongocat Remember to skip the keymap for gingham keyboard in keymap.c and instead use one for your keyboard.
