Generating PDF documents from templates - NPM package
I don't understand what you mean with "direct" pdf creation so I'm maybe missing some point. I meant stuff like https://github.com/schibsted/jsx-pdf this for example. It's just the way the API can be used and you can build on top of it instead of just creating objects.

Sile: A Modern Rewrite of TeX
This is the most exciting feature of Sile to me -- since I currently rely on a slow and memory hungry Java toolchain to convert docbook to pdf with fop -- but I just tried it on two docbook documents (a book and also a short article) and it failed to convert both. Apparently the docbook support is currently very incomplete:
