I’ve been running Nextcloud on a DigitalOcean droplet, backed by S3 compatible storage from Wasabi for about 3 years now - it’s been pretty seamless. I think the old Nextcloud client syncing issues are a thing of the past (unless you work will really big files). Costs me $15/mo total.

My Nextcloud instance gets one-way synced using rclone to a NAS once daily, and one-way synced weekly as a tar archive to Onedrive (1TB storage from Office365 is otherwise unused, so...). The rclone setup is all with docker-compose + sops for rclone config, so I can just git clone and Docker-compose anywhere to get another machine backing up.

A nice addition is that the droplet serves as a WireGuard server that all my devices are pretty much always connected to (with split routing).

I host a couple of other services on the droplet including The Lounge for IRC, my personal website and a pastebin type app.

If anyone is interested, the whole setup is on GitHub at https://github.com/jnsgruk/infra

  • NPM + Nextcloud + Onlyoffice

I have been trying to setup NPM with Nexcloud and OnlyOffice. I know they have Collabora, but I do not like it. I have been using OnlyOffice for a year and things worked great. Though I need to update by using NPM. Regular NGINX is very confusing to me. So I found this tutorial that seemed easy and promising. Though I feel it needs updating because some of the wording isn't clear. What I used to use was from this docker-compose.yml. Things worked fine but now they don't. As far as I can tell, where OnlyOffice is trying to write the files to is now different. I also use Portainer and as best I can tell from logs, Nextcloud sees OnlyOffice but when trying to fetch the file, it cannot. It says " ONLYOFFICE cannot be reached. Please contact admin". Though when I run a test both though the OnlyOffice in settings and from occ they both say everything is good.

u/DerpyderpRed If your pretty handy with Docker you could get things to work for sure with OnlyOffice. I recommend OnlyOffice because it is the one that I have had the least issues with working properly not to mention their collaboration works wonderfully. I have had collaboration issues with Collabora not saving files properly and losing information. The one that I found works best is found on this GitHub link. Depending on how you go about it. you can just install the two images of nginx and the Document server as containers and get them running fine. I hope this helps.
