I wish OSX had better support for window/desktop arrangement when disconnecting external monitors.
Slate can manage windows for you, slightly more involved but likely to give you better results.

MacOS doesn't do this natively, but you have options: - If you just want to move windows around with some degree of keyboard customization, go for Rectangle. - If you want more control, such as sizing a bunch of windows at the same time, use Slate. - If you can code and want really high degrees of customization, you won't go wrong with Hammerspoon.

I didn't want to pay for something I could do myself so I wrote my own using Automator JS: https://github.com/Alives/macos_window_positions Not all apps support the window features, but everything I use daily does. I mapped save positions then sleep to Command-F13 and restore positions is Command-Option-Control-R.
