Moving from Doom to Vanilla
See, I'm not so sure about this — I use save-place-mode on my own config (github.com/jakebox/jake-emacs) and don't get this behavior.

Linus thinks emacs is terrible
IMHO You don't really need a modern Emacs Distribution, you just can set everything with a simple ELisp script. I stopped using those distros because startup time takes a major hit and just setup my own config. With MELPA this is basically very easy nowadays. A friend and I share our own emacs config for Python coding if you want to have a look at it.
