  • Using Exwm Do you recommend it?
    2 projects | /r/emacs | 24 Jan 2023
For me with whatever tiling WM, I am not interested in creating my own Desktop Environment, so I run it within gnome-flashback to get all the desktop niceties like hot-plugging monitors, hotkeys for media, screenshots etc., ssh/gpg agent, compose key, and many more. I am not interested in rolling my own solutions for each of these in turn, only realize what I haven't set up yet right when I need it. See exwm-gnome-flashback, or i3-gnome-flashback.
  • Just enough OS for EXWM

Not much is needed, but quite a lot is nice to have. You can go through and add each feature you find you want, sometimes months later when you realize it's something you occasionally need, or you can just take an already-created desktop environment and swap in your window manager. E.g. I used gnome-flashback with Ubuntu 20.04.
  • EXWM vs. other tiling WM

In both cases I used gnome-flashback to get a curated Desktop Environment without having to roll my own - e.g. i3-gnome-flashback and exwm-gnome-flashback.
  • My new emacs desktop, thanks to EXWM

This was a single-line fix, enabling all of gnome (including multimedia keys etc) https://github.com/WJCFerguson/exwm-gnome-flashback
