Discord isn't decentralized, it's not private, but it's popular and has free API access! Now, an alternative is a reverse engineered Discord backend (originally Fosscord) called Spacebar. It's not complete, but it's designed to be Discord compatible (talk to Discord peeps), decentralized, and E2E encrypted. They have their own client and early server.

spacebarchat is basically an alternative client. They're trying to write a server, but as it stands it still just talks to Discord. (Which I think is against TOS and can get your account banned?) Their own project team chat is still on Discord. Also their website is offline for "rebranding" and has been for about a year it looks like.

oh cool, I never heard to spacebar.chat before, seems like it's in alpha at the moment. And yeah, I tried revolt just out of curiosity, and it's definitely not a long term solution for anyone seeking greater control of their private communications.

yes, https://github.com/spacebarchat/spacebarchat does seem to plan to be a discord alternative. i did not know about that Project.
