n is common Node.js version manager and jenv is the equivalent for java

I personally recommend jenv to set your Java version for your local development directory only. It's lightweight and cross-platform, provided you're using bash/zsh or similar. (However: it tells you to echo some lines into ~/.bash_profile, but this is true only on Mac. For Linux/Windows, ~/.bashrc is a more appropriate location (or the zsh equivalent)).

Fish is amazing as long as you absolutely don't ever need any bash scripts changing environment variables in your shell. That's fortunately very rare.
