You can use gramm for all your fancy plotting needs, but doing something like that well will require using a vector editing software (inkscape, affinidy designer, illustrator...).

Great work, It looks like it’s a match made in heaven for gramm which already has brewer and viridis… I’ll take a look into interfacing them.

Thanks! I used MATLAB to lay out the figures, then used matlab2tikz to convert to TikZ/PGFplots code for typesetting and tweaking as needed. tikzplotlib offers a similar pipeline for Python/matplotlib.
