Why not custom Context type ?
I was using a custom context type before introduction of Context in the stdlib. I was inspired by https://github.com/gocraft/web . Of course i call it ctx Context... And pass it to each handlers and so on. It works, i've no issue with this since years.

Can I mix REST and gRPC?
You can through api gateway. It's easier with Iris web framework, example code: https://github.com/kataras/iris/tree/master/_examples/mvc/grpc-compatible.
