How to stream data from Mastodon public timelines to Apache Kafka with NodeJS and TypeScript
Mastodon has been rising in popularity over recent months. If you're not yet familiar with this exotic online creature, Mastodon is an open-source social networking software for microblogging. Instead of being a single network, like Twitter, Mastodon is a federated platform that connects independent interconnected servers. This makes it a fully decentralised system. It relies on ActivityPub and uses the ActivityStreams 2.0 data format and JSON-LD. As for the functionality, it resembles closely Twitter - you can read the timeline, post messages and interact with other users.

Single-user Mastodon Instance is a Bad Idea
Why not? Nobody in the github discussion including Gargron and ClearlyClaire seem to be opposed to backfilling server-side in principle.

Welcome Mastodon to Fast Forward!
Mastodon is a growing project and community, and they need help. We already mentioned that they’re hiring a DevOps Engineer. They’re hiring a Software Engineer and a Product Designer too. You can also join the community discussion, suggest a feature for their roadmap, and get set up to contribute to the codebase.
We’re thrilled to announce that Mastodon is now a member of Fast Forward.

iOS 16.4: iMessage now supports rich previews for Mastodon posts
Again misleading and incorrect. Finding a server is easy, simple as going to joinmastodon.org and filter servers that allow registration immediately, this way you don't have to deal with invite-only servers which are clearly marked. Regarding bans, you can review the rules before joining a server, if you want porn, then look at the rules or the values of the Mastodon community you are joining, many servers mention "mark content as sensitive for NSFW" to keep the server a safe space while allowing users for NSFW with a warning, this is often a rule in many subreddits and even twitter itself (not sure if things have changed since Elon tookover). While other servers have no NSFW rule, so you can literally check all the rules before joining a server, when you "sign up" for a server through joinmastodon.org, rules are the FIRST thing that is shown.
You fail to understand my point put forth. The extra step is very tiny and even for the average user, it's as easy as picking a discord server or even easier than signing up for a slack workplace. You keep repeating yourself while I already answered, it's not really that hard, just go to joinmastodon.org and choose a server from the general category.

Upon learning that the Governor General of Canada was closing the comment section of her social media accounts due to abusive nonsense, I wrote her an email recommending the far better and more civil option of Mastodon (see below for a copy of it)

Considering you can't turn off replies on posts on Mastodon, that might not be an attractive proposal. BUT the "disable replies" feature request on the Mastodon Github issue list is the third most popular of all time: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/8565
