How do you manage remote dev workstations in the cloud?
Gitpod (https://www.gitpod.io) is a great option here. It aims to remove the ops burden, provide a great developer experience and give you tools to manage your spend (eg automatic timeouts, suspend/resume, standardized creation of environments).
Full disclosure: I’m one of Gitpod’s co-founders.

Dear AWS, how do I build & develop purely on AWS right now?
As an alternative for Cloud9, you can use vscode.dev, which runs VS Code in the browser or other alternatives that are more integrated and personalized like gitpod.io or Github Codespaces.

From Text Editors to Cloud-based IDEs - a DevEx journey
Then, we had the rise of the cloud and the arrival of cloud-based IDEs. The first cloud-based IDE was PHPanywhere (eventually becoming CodeAnywhere) in 2009, followed by Cloud9 in 2010 (before AWS bought it in 2016), Glitch (2018), GitPod (2019), GitHub Codespaces (2020), and Google’s Project IDX (2024).

Expose local dev server with SSH tunnel and Docker
There are already services like localtunnel or ngrok for this purpose, but when you actually start using them, you will often find out that they have limitations on their free plans. So, we will configure our own custom setup once and have it always available for convenient and practical usage which will save a lot of time and nerves in the long run.

Portr – open-source ngrok alternative designed for teams
Thanks for the history. I maintain this list[0], and wasn't aware of OG localtunnel, likely because there's a somewhat newer and now more popular project with the same name[1]. You appear to be correct on timing. Here's the earliest commits on GitHub for each of the projects:
OG localtunnel (2010): https://github.com/progrium/localtunnel/tree/fb82920d9d3e538...
Other localtunnel (2012): https://github.com/localtunnel/localtunnel/tree/93d62b9dbb9f...
ngrok (2012): https://github.com/inconshreveable/ngrok/tree/8f4795ecac7f92...
I'll see that OG localtunnel gets added to the list for posterity.

Cloudflare Tunnel: a free ngrok alternative for exposing local Rails apps to the internet
These is a very common problem. Luckily, it's been solved already. My go-to tool for this was ngrok or localtunnel. Both of these tools are great, but they didn't fit my needs perfectly.

Creating Secure Tunnels in Ruby on Rails with Ngrok
