Synology Photos is utter bullcrap
For me, Google Photos is actually my source. Most of my pictures are taken with my android phone. I then have a process run that runs https://github.com/dtylman/gitmoo-goog to retrieve the pictures from Google Photos every day.

Google Photos gave me an excuse to upgrade! 8TBx2 WD Reds in Raid 1.

Sync Photos From Google Photos To Synology
i did that, but was still not found. I just resorted to https://github.com/dtylman/gitmoo-goog which I run on a windows laptop at boot time. Its not ideal but does what I need.

I don't know if the original repo and LibrePhotos will permanently diverge (that appears to be the intention), but I like you am a bit confused at the necessity for a permanent fork and I'd like to know more too before committing to a version.
