general.el VS ace-window

I can vouch for general.el[1]. It's easy to use and it integrates with use-package clauses, which-key and evil states. You can look at my config[2] for examples.

If I have to say one or two things about them, general's readme looks a lot and may be hard to grasp for starters who just want to bind keys. I want bind to be the go to package for newcomers and unify people who are just bored of typing define-key or okay with looping since bind is close to that simplicity yet being powerful due to its design. If you are missing something, please open an issue and see if we can add it.

For binding keys I highly recommend the package noctuid/general.el. Specifically binding to general-key-dispatch. Something like: (general-define-key :states '(normal visual) "/" (general-key-dispatch "/" 'ag-search :default 'evil-search-forward))

I use standard Colemak. I've added the following configuration to be able to exit insert mode by pressing l and h in sequence (that key combination is convenient to type, but still uncommon enough in most words, the main exception being localhost). (general-imap "l" (general-key-dispatch 'self-insert-command :timeout 0.25 "h" 'evil-normal-state)) The above code uses https://github.com/noctuid/general.el.

https://github.com/noctuid/general.el Keybinding and leader-key manager for Emacs. There are other packages but this is the best one imo - it even includes vim-style map commands.

Thanks that is helpful. I do have a question though. Is there any plugin similar to ace-window? I frequently have a situation where I have two frames (basically two windows) that are connected to the same Emacs process, and I am jumping between buffers in both frames.

I recently started using workspaces in my workflow, and although I know many packages are available in Emacs such as the ones mentioned in the comments, but what worked for me so far is just make a second frame and use ace-window with the variable aw-scope set to 'frame. And from there I just move one frame to the appropriate workspace in my desktop environment and that's it. It's worth keeping in mind that the buffers are still shared so might not be the perfect workspace experience, but I don't think that matters in Emacs.

Try the ace-window package. I think you're referring to C-x o which is bound to other-window.

I'd like to use ffap (to open files/dirs) in windows I select with ace-window (https://github.com/abo-abo/ace-window). Similar to what aw-switch-buffer-in-window and aw-switch-buffer-other-window do, but with find-file-at-point instead of buffer selection. Crucially, the point means the where I am when the function is called.

If someone has a big monitor I recommend changing C-x 1 delete-other-windowsto revert to have 2 windows open, (like in this config) and using ace-window to navigate to your many windows.
