Boston-Icons
Boston is an exclusive icon theme inspired by functionalist design and a touch of early computer icons. The project is focused on elemental properties, basic shapes, a reduced color palette and visual hierarchy. (by thecheis)

Electrical engineers on the brink of extinction threaten entire tech ecosystems
Could not agree more. I have designed my first PCB in Kicad as a MIT licence project.
Kicad ecosystem is very much alive and I was able to reuse dimensions from another project for the same computer.
I made a RAM expansion board for Sharp X68000. You can check it out on https://github.com/stas2k/galspanic

Monochrome application icons workaround?
But I think the best solution is to ask those apps to include symbolic icons. And for users, one can use an icon theme that provide symbolic icons as a workaround. For example, unlike other themes, Boston doesn't have app icons, except if they are missing symbolic icons or looks too outdated.
