While not strictly a Kubernetes extension, I find navigating the YAML farm can lead me to losing track of where I left off. Where was I in my 2,000 line configuration file again? That's when Footsteps shines a light on where my short-term memory has lost its footing. This brilliant extension, also for VSCode or its equivalents, will show you where you most recently edited a document through highlighted text. As you continue to edit code, Footsteps slowly fades those colors away, giving you a sense of your coding pattern. Install this and save yourself quite a few moments of feeling lost.

K3S is a small, self-contained k8s distribution. By self-contained I mean it ships with containerd embedded in it, so you don't even need to install that. You can download a small binary and run it on any number of nodes, and have a working cluster up and running quickly. It ships with some built in components like Traefik and a load balancer.

Invest in learning Kubernetes. Most things are available on Kubernetes and then it is much easier to move your kubernetes systems between clouds or even to on-prem. You also get the added benefit to run your whole system on your laptop. Kubernetes is also fun to learn and use and if you are interested in any kind of homelab there are super simple kubernetes distributions like k3s that you can install with a simple command. Kubernetes does not have to be complicated. and then there are managed offerings if you are running production workloads in the different clouds. Another lightweight one is

If you want to learn you should definitely do it. I run single node clusters all the time, it is a great way to repeatedly and quickly deploy services on anything that can provide a k8s api. Check out for a nice and easy kubernetes version and don't be afraid to start over. Make sure you store the manifests somewhere and you can get back to the point you were very quickly.

I would suggest creating a VM in Proxmox, installing Ubuntu/Debian on that VM, then installing K3s on that OS.
