There's a huge desire to have a framework that is cross-platform so that you can have only one codebase for your app. Is React Native the future? I don't know as Flutter is a major competitor (it uses Dart).

I can say with my own example that once you know the basics, picking up a new language will be a piece of cake. I recently got the opportunity to try out Flutter for a project. Flutter uses a programming language called [Dart] https://dart.dev/) which is developed by Google. Since I was familiar with the basics of object-oriented programming in Java, the transition to Dart was essentially painless as it uses the same concepts underneath albeit with a slightly different syntax.

If you're waiting for Firebase to come to desktop for Flutter for Desktop, you could wrap Flutter in Electron, and just use the FlutterFire Web Plugins. Here's a boilerplate. https://github.com/ishangavidusha/flutter-electron You can also write plugins which use Electron APIs i.e. Native Desktop APIs. While Flutter in Electron performance seems to be at the very least (in my opinion) on par with web, Flutter running natively on Desktop will obviously be the better choice when it's available.
