Ask HN: How to get started with practical hardware?
Agreed that keyboards are a good early project. To add to that, if you play video games, leverless arcade controllers can be a fun build also. Pretty similar overall as far as parts and shape, but the firmware they run (stuff like GP2040-CE or HayBox) make them act as controllers instead of keyboards, and they can even work on game consoles. Specifically I'd recommend the Flatbox rev 5[0] and the Open-Frame1[1].

Troubleshooting print rotated diagonal
Tried to print this case bottom https://github.com/jfedor2/flatbox/blob/master/hardware-rev5/3d-printed-case/Flatbox-rev5-Bottom-hotswap.stl on my a1 mini. It doesn’t fit horizontal or vertical so I rotated it diagonally and it was doing fine until just over 50%. It did ask me to change camera to smooth and wanted to add a tower that wouldn’t fit. But I went with the warning on traditional. Any ideas how to make this work or why it went bad.

What is the best way to make JFedor's Github Flatbox project Xbox Series X compatible?
I am in the middle of building this https://github.com/jfedor2/flatbox/tree/master/hardware-rev4 and had the following epiphany "wait a minute, is this even compatible with the Xbox Series X?"

What’s with the fightstick price inflation?
If you have access to 3d printer and can do basic soldering you can make one yourself, so it'd be even cheaper, since it's based on jFedor's flatbox, which itself is a variation of many of his prototypes you can find on thingverse.

[Australia] John Oliver looking for a Flatbox Rev5 print
Looking into building a Flatbox, specifically Rev5 for John Oliver and it requires a 2 part case (Top and Bottom), and 12 buttons 3d Printed (11xSmall, 1xBig)

FAQ and Fightstick Question MEGATHREAD, Continued
Does it exist someone who sells flatbox-like case/pcb where can I plug my own Brook UFB (I already have one)? https://github.com/jfedor2/flatbox, this Flatbox has a Brook Ps3/Ps4 version, but that board is squared, I don't think a UFB can fit. There are plenty of versions of this on Aliexpress. I don't know how to modify / make my own starting from that repository, no one else already did something compatible with UFB?

Who sells these types of PCBs
I think Junkfood Arcade is the only one to have the Brook Fusion integrated. The next best thing (that I know of) is the flatbox, which is open sourced so you can get one made yourself - https://github.com/jfedor2/flatbox

Is it possible to use an analog stick instead of buttons for a RP2040-Zero based controller
First of all, I was on my way trying to make a flatbox following jfedor2's guide (https://github.com/jfedor2/flatbox/tree/master/hardware-rev5), as I was searching around, I stumbled on a post of someone trying to get/make a fightstick for their cousin who has only one hand. This got me curious and with a little bit of research, it seems to me that there isn't any well-known solution for single-handed controllers.

Building a USB SNES Controller
If you're making a home made arcade stick, check out the GP2040-CE project - https://github.com/OpenStickCommunity/GP2040-CE
It's got low latency and good compatibility for a bunch of platforms. Even some compatibility for PS4.

I have a problem with the chat
My advice is to rework your mixbox, as it is pretty much the only long-term solution. Personally, I would swap out the keyboard microcontroller and instead wire your keyswitches to a PiPico running the GP2040-CE firmware. That way you can easily remap the keys, as well as select between your controller acting one of these:

MaplePad – RP2040 Dreamcast controller, VMU, and Purupuru (rumble pack) emulator
Talking about RP2040 powered controller firmware. GP2040 is an amazing project, which is used a lot in the Fighting Game Community where custom controllers are common. https://github.com/OpenStickCommunity/GP2040-CE

Choosing a Brooks board
you can connect to it the same way as a brook pcb (without soldering), and its firmware is far more customizable with great input latency test results. you can read about the firmware here: https://github.com/OpenStickCommunity/GP2040-CE

My "free" DIY hitbox
congrats on the build & thank you for sharing your experience! if I may suggest you to take a look at the open source project using the Raspberry Pi Pico and other boards based on the RP2040 microcontrollers. https://github.com/OpenStickCommunity/GP2040-CE

Concept: Slime All Button Controller
In theory, one would only need to use the Pi Pico (Using the CP2040-CE Firmware), since many play fighting games on PC; At least, that I am aware of. This, along with a few other things, would make it an "okay" controller at best, IMO.

DIY CrossUp Questions
I suspect GP2040-CE will pretty soon have some capability to switch between profiles on the fly, though of course you can never predict these things with volunteer open source development. In any case, I'd recommend GP2040-CE as an option over the Brook. You can buy a Pico breakout such as this one for cheaper than the Brook & have access to all sorts of cool features now and in the future.
